Secondary Teacher Education Program Licensure (STEP): Licensure

Secondary Teacher Education Program Licensure (STEP)

USU's state-approved and nationally accredited Secondary Teacher Education Program (STEP) enables students to qualify for a secondary teaching license (grades 6-12).

STEP is available statewide through a combination of online and broadcast courses. The 35 credits in STEP are ideally taken in a three-semester sequence, but RCDE students may schedule courses differently to meet individual needs or course availability.

Program Requirements

To obtain secondary licensure, you must complete:

  1. 30 credits of university studies, including written communications;
  2. an approved composite teaching major OR an approved teaching major and teaching minor;
  3. the 35-credit STEP sequence of courses, which includes the creation of a professional portfolio and culminates in student teaching.
